"Pirke Aboth" consists of paragraphs on ethical maxims attributed to 65 teachers, Tannaim, covering a period of about two centuries B.C.E. and two centuries C.E. The form and sentiment of these sayings are of such charm and force, that they found their way to the Jewish heart, as no other writing ever has. It is now included in the prayer book, and has been so since the eleventh century. It became a custom to read a chapter on Sabbath afternoons, after the Minhah service, during the summer months. Saul Raskin's beautiful works of art accompany the Hebrew and Yiddish with the English translations.

In the shadows of the Russian ghetto a young poet, Hayyim Nahman Bialik, appeared, who was destined to become the lyrical voice of his people. He led the Hebrew literary renaissance, bringing vigor and modernity to the ancient language and reasserting its continuity throughout the ages. His epic poem, "The City of Slaughter" has poignant relevancy to the unforgettable catastrophe that overwhelmed our people, and his "Talmud-Student" symbolize the age long devotion of Jews to learning and tradition. The poet, Lisitzky, gives us some explanation of his humble silence in this autobiography. Rich in sadness and beauty, Lisitzky limns with great artistry his wretched youth, and sketches somber portraits of orphan hood, poverty and melancholy. With a kind of lustful glee and self inflicted pain of a person shedding the burden of many years that has subdued his tongue and pen, he bares the dark sides of his soul, the sense of inferiority deeply rooted in him since early youth because of his humble origins, even as he tells of the ambition to elevate himself which he harbored in his heart, to blot out his "disgrace." He describes the humiliations and setbacks that from the start imbued him with a wrath and desperation which remained with him until, at the age of sixteen, he left his town in White Russia to find refuge in the land of his father's sojourning, the United States. These childhood impressions which Lisitzky described so well when he grew to maturity gave a dark tinge to his poetry, which fisrt blossomed in a remote Canadian village, and which has since flowered and grown profusely. Lisitzky's poetry is wide in range, diverse in form. It includes lyrical meditation, odes and sonnets, a massive lyrical drama, narratives of Jewish and general content, an epic of American Indian lore and a variety of Negro spirituals.

The use of Yiddish today is a learned skill and the grasp of any literary text is at best tenuous. Books generations-old may also be unfortunately and unfairly judged within contemporary parameters of critique and literary studies. For many new dedicated Yiddish readers the burdens of "modern analysis" could set impossible obstacles in the understanding and enjoyment of these sonten in Yiddish. Berl Lapin painstakingly undertook the immense task of translating William Shakespeare's Sonnets into this Yiddish work of poetry. This Yiddish/English volume was awarded the National Poetry Prize by the Jewish Book Council.

Abraham Wolf Binder (1895-1966) was a notable figure in American Jewish cultural life. As a Jewish musician, his work was largely devoted to the traditional musach ha-tefilah- melody of prayer in religious services and Judaic folk song. This commemorative volume is an edited collection of his published writings on Jewish Music. More than a volume in tribute to a distinguished American-Jewish Musician, this book is intended as a source of information on various subjects within the scope of recent Jewish musical history. Among the twenty-five articles by Binder are included a wide range of important topics. From the first one published in 1927 to the last posthumous publications, there are treatments of materials which Binder gathered by study, research and professional experience during his prolific career.

The art of calligraphy has been greatly admired throughout history, both by those proficient in scribal skills, as well as by those to whom it has aesthetic and cultural appeal.
