Why Be A Lawyer? A Memoir (Leonard M. Weintraub)
Why be a lawyer? A Memoir---- If the Almighty ever decides to return me to earth after my parting, the only occupation that I would desire would be a duly licensed attorney at law in the State of New York. I always believed that the best fighters who made the most progress for mankind were individuals who fought with their minds. I find no fault with individuals who earn large amounts of money and live their lives the way they would like to live them, but I find there is more reward and satisfaction in accomplishing something meaningful for a human being. I love the law. I handle myself with honesty, integrity and morality at all times. As I think about my life and career, I cannot pinpoint what I would have been doing professionally or otherwise if I had not become an attorney. I may have gone into real estate or the financial world, though how successful I might have been is speculative.

Chimera: A Period of Madness (Isaac Bourla)
In addition to the narration of his daily life in the camps, Isaac Bourla jotted down the thoughts, impressions and feelings of the young idealistic boy that he was then, the boy who was suddenly taken from one world and transplanted in another completely alien one. Like millions of other people he would never have believed that such a world existed. After the two darkest years of his life he emerged from this hell realizing to just what extent the human conscience can be debased, to what levels of degradation a human being can be led, and how much can be endured to secure ones survival.

The Spirit of Jewish Law (George Horowitz)
Jewish law has evolved throughout the centuries as a mature, complex system with direct bearing on the evolution of law within Christendom. The modifications of Roman law by the Church in the Middle Ages, the covenant law of the American Puritans, and a significant portion of Anglo-American secular law has been derived from and influenced by this older legal tradition. At the same time, because so much of that tradition has been embodied in Hebrew and Aramaic texts, it had remained largely inaccessible to all but Talmudic scholars until the publication of Horowit's work.

A Liter of Soup and Sixty Grams of Bread (Heinz Salvator Kounio and translated by Marcia Haddad Ikonomopoulos)
On March 15, 1943 the first Greek transport left from Salonika and arrived at Auschwitz on March 20th. It was the beginning of the end of Greek Jewery. Among the 2,800 deported Jews was the 15-year old Heinz Kouinio. Wrenched abruptly from a comfortable upper-middle class home, Heinz found himself immersed in the horrors of the Nazi concentration camps. Heinz, along with his mother, father and sister, would ultimately survive. What kept him going was his fervent wish that his murdered brethren would be remembered and that their killers would be punished. Heinz kept a diary in which he recorded his experiences. That diary is the basis of this book.

Much has been written about the political, historical, economic and military aspects of Israel and the Middle East. This book deals with ideas. It portrays the key figures, major concepts and crucial events in their confluence as they relate to the ideals that inspired the founding of Israel. Scholarly without being pedantic, the book offers an insight into the making of the modern Jew in Israel and his counterpart throughout the world. It also helps in the understanding of why a State with so little geography and short history should have so many friends and so many enemies.

Jewish Forerunners of Christianity (Adolph Danziger)
Danziger's biographical sketches of the primary figures in the ancient rabbinic Judaism continue to hold value and interest for today's readers. Written in engaging narrative style, these essays were among the earliest studies in America to reflect the traditions of German Jewish historical scholarship applied to the formative period of Judaism. His notes reflect a sound reading of Jewish sources. In particular, his chapters on Hillel, Akiva and Judah ha-Nasi illuminate how their sharpness of mind and strength of purpose forged the tools for Jewish survival during the next millennia.

The City Without Jews: A Novel of Our Time (Hugo Bettauer)
The subtitle of "The City Without Jews," A Novel of our Time," remains unfortunately true. Bettauer takes as his subject one of the oldest themes in Jewish history: exile. Exile appears constantly in Jewish literature and history. Written in 1923, the author imagines that anti-Semitism leads Austria to expel all Jews. He describes the expulsion, but does not linger over the suffering, humiliation, and trauma such expulsions have historically caused. Families may be split, and lovers torn from each other, proprietors may be forced to sell their businesses at ridiculously low prices, but Bettauer is less concerned with what happens to any one individual than with taking an idea and carrying to its ultimate conclusion no matter how ridiculous it may seem. This is very much a novel of ideas, not of character. One of the ideas is that the consequences of expulsion are as bad or worse for the country which throws out its Jews as they are for the Jews themselves.

So Strange My Path: A Spiritual Pilgrimage (Abraham Carmel)
It is unusual if not unique for an established Catholic Priest to forsake Christianity and convert to Judaism. "So Strange My Path" reveals the inside story of the former Father Kenneth Cox who embarked upon a dramatic spiritual journey to the Jewish faith. The author, Abraham Carmel, vividly describes his agonizing period of doubt, his courage and conviction to deny his former religion, and the many obstacles he had to overcome in order to achieve his spiritual goal. After five years of probation and intensive study, Mr. Carmel was received by the London Beth Din (Court of the Chief Rabbi) as a proselyte. An observant Jew, Abraham Carmel personified the rare rabbinic type of a Ger Tzedek - the proselyte of righteousness - who is admitted into the Jewish faith because of a sincere desire to adopt Jewish values and ideals.

The Commentary of Levi Ben Gersom ,Gersonides, on the Book of Job (Abraham L. Lassen, D.H.L.)
Rabbi Levi ben Gersom was one of the foremost Jewish philosophers of the Middle Ages. His work, "The Wars of the Lord," is still studied with interest, not only for its own sake, but also for the influence it exerted on the thinking of Spinoza. In his commentary on Job, Rabbi Levi explains the difficulties of individual passages, and how the argument between Job and his friends develops. The Book of Job deals, primarily, with the problem of injustice in this world, namely, why the wicked prosper and the righteous suffer. This lead of course, to the greater problem of Divine Providence in this world, which in turn is connected with the question of God's omniscience and prescience of events and happenings in this world, as well as with the discussion of the nature of the human soul which is affected by the events an occurrences.

Worship and Ethics: A Study in Rabbinic Judaism (Max Kadushin)
Worship and Ethics not only describes certain key forms of Jewish worship and the character of Jewish ethics, but also demonstrates that in rabbinic Judaism worship has ethical concomitants. The individual and society are not two entities distinct from each other, for it is society which makes the experience of the individual possible. And, in the author's words, "We regard ethics not as a system thought out by a philosopher but as a pattern of concepts developed by society." In rabbinic Judaism, complex society is thought of as organic, maintaining stability while allowing full scope to individual personalities. This is made possible by supplying a pattern of common value concepts, represented by such conceptual terms as God's love, Torah, charity, and repentance, all of which are elements of a basic vocabulary. Both worship and ethics are shown to be governed by Halakah-Jewish law. In the merging of these two spheres the "normal mystical" experience of God is achieved, a religious experience available to the common man and woman.

Who Crucified Jesus ( Solomon Zeitlin)
Who Crucified Jesus and The impact of the Crucification on Christian civilization, world history and the Jewish people. Over the centuries, this controversial question has troubled the world and has been a source of dispute and debate. And, throughout the ages, the Jewish people, unjustly accused of deicide, has carried the burden of the Crucifixion. Dr. Zeitlin refutes this accusation with authoritative and well documented arguments. In a lucid, objective presentation of legal and historical evidence, this illuminating book makes it clear that the Jews were not responsible for the death of Jesus. The crucifixion is discussed in terms of its centrality in Christian civilization, its meaning for world history, and its impact on the Jewish people.

In the Grip of the Cross Currents (Ephraim E. Lisitzky)
The poet, Lisitzky, gives us some explanation of his humble silence in this autobiography. Rich in sadness and beauty, Lisitzky limns with great artistry his wretched youth, and sketches somber portraits of orphan hood, poverty and melancholy. With a kind of lustful glee and self inflicted pain of a person shedding the burden of many years that has subdued his tongue and pen, he bares the dark sides of his soul, the sense of inferiority deeply rooted in him since early youth because of his humble origins, even as he tells of the ambition to elevate himself which he harbored in his heart, to blot out his "disgrace." He describes the humiliations and setbacks that from the start imbued him with a wrath and desperation which remained with him until, at the age of sixteen, he left his town in White Russia to find refuge in the land of his father's sojourning, the United States. These childhood impressions which Lisitzky described so well when he grew to maturity gave a dark tinge to his poetry, which fisrt blossomed in a remote Canadian village, and which has since flowered and grown profusely. Lisitzky's poetry is wide in range, diverse in form. It includes lyrical meditation, odes and sonnets, a massive lyrical drama, narratives of Jewish and general content, an epic of American Indian lore and a variety of Negro spirituals.

Sonnets: William Shakespeare (Translated by B. Lapin)
The use of Yiddish today is a learned skill and the grasp of any literary text is at best tenuous. Books generations-old may also be unfortunately and unfairly judged within contemporary parameters of critique and literary studies. For many new dedicated Yiddish readers the burdens of "modern analysis" could set impossible obstacles in the understanding and enjoyment of these sonten in Yiddish. Berl Lapin painstakingly undertook the immense task of translating William Shakespeare's Sonnets into this Yiddish work of poetry. This Yiddish/English volume was awarded the National Poetry Prize by the Jewish Book Council.

Judaism's Truth Answers the Missionaries (Beth Moshe)
This book is a Jews for Judaism guide, written primarily to counteract the missionary's thrust directed at the Jew. It is aimed at the mind and heart of Jews who have an interest in or an attraction to Christianity. In addition, devoted Jews and, indeed, non-Jews who are curious about Judaism's answers will fiind these pages fascinating. EXPOSED ARE THE ERRORS OF THE MISSIONARIES THATARE HEAPED UPON UNINFORMED JEWS, AND STRENGTHENED ARE THE FOUNDATIONS BLOCKS OF JUDAISM GIVEN US BY GOD. Judaism's eternal sacredness is revealed using passages from both Hebrew Scriptures and the New Testament. A Book of Jewish Curiosities (David M. Hausdorff)
In the great body of Jewish literature there are many fascinating and enormously provocative statements and references which are either prophetically prochronistic - far ahead of their times - or indicate the possession of undreamed of knowledge. This is a collection of the strange and unusual from thirty-five centuries of Jewish thought, theological only insofar as religious significance permeates every phase of Jewish life. The sources include THE TORAH, the Written Law, God's Word to Moses on Mt. Sinai; THE MISHNAH, the Oral Law and teachings transmitted to Moses on Mt. Sinai; THE TALMUD, commentary which accumulated around the Mishnah; THE MIDRASHIM, literary works, some of them quite ancient, of scriptural interpretation; and other authentic authoritative sources.

The Essential Torah (Norbert Weinberg)
A comprehensive review of the Five Books of Moses with selected notes from the Classical Commentaries. Here at last is a much needed volume that will serve as an indispensable aid for those who wish to acquaint themselves with the grandeur of the Bible and the teachings of the Prophets. The author has presented in clear and concise language: a faithful review of each weekly Torah reading, a synopsis of each prophetic section and a liberal selection from the classical commentaries. Each chapter is complete and exhaustive review of the weekly Torah section. Great personalities emerge as human beings. Their messages are no longer camouflaged by the 'thee's and thou's" of complicated and antiquated English translations. A short chapter/synopsis for each Torah portion allows the reader to familiarize or re-acquaint themselves with that weeks parsha.

Ecclesiastes: Stories to Live By (Joshua S. Sperka)
A new translation in modern idiom of the Book of Ecclesiastes with an exciting story illustrating each verse forms the uniqueness of this book. The reason for this new and original translation into clear and contemporary English was to remove the language barrier of archaic biblical prose. The second dramatic innovation of this book is that each verse is explained and illuminated by a parable or a fable. In this book you will find a rich and fascinating collection of parables, fables and stories covering a period of three thousand years. They range from the earliest classical sources to those of present day. Each verse and its story is a self contained unit of reading matter. The author asserts that the book teaches "there is something positive and affirmative in life. Man has a duty to face up to its problems. In search for purpose man will find the purpose of his search."

Selected Poems of Hayyim Nahman Bialik: Translated From The Hebrew (Edited with Introduction by Israel Efros)
In the shadows of the Russian ghetto a young poet, Hayyim Nahman Bialik, appeared, who was destined to become the lyrical voice of his people. He led the Hebrew literary renaissance, bringing vigor and modernity to the ancient language and reasserting its continuity throughout the ages. His epic poem, "The City of Slaughter" has poignant relevancy to the unforgettable catastrophe that overwhelmed our people, and his "Talmud-Student" symbolize the age long devotion of Jews to learning and tradition. His lyrics of hope take on added meaning when read in the light of the establishment of the state of Israel.

Brownsville: The Birth, Development and Passing of a Jewish Community in New York (Alter F. Landesman)
In 1886, when the first Jewish property owner took title to his parcel of land in the then village of Brownsville, the area was a cluster of cottages and tiny shops in the midst of dairy farmlands. Woods covered what were to become the main thoroughfares of Pitkin and Hopkinson Avenues. Less than forty years later, Brownsville was a tumultuous, thoroughly urban center some 400,000 people-75% of them Jewish. Brownsville in 1925 was the largest center of Jewish population in all of New York City - larger even than the Lower East Side of Manhattan, from which many of its inhabitants had come in the search for a cleaner, healthier, more spacious living. Here now is the story of that teeming, colorful, close-knit community, known at its height as "the Jerusalem of America."

Studies in Jewish Music; Collected Writings of A.W. Binder (Edited by Irene Heskes)
Abraham Wolf Binder (1895-1966) was a notable figure in American Jewish cultural life. As a Jewish musician, his work was largely devoted to the traditional musach ha-tefilah- melody of prayer in religious services and Judaic folk song. This commemorative volume is an edited collection of his published writings on Jewish Music. More than a volume in tribute to a distinguished American-Jewish Musician, this book is intended as a source of information on various subjects within the scope of recent Jewish musical history. Among the twenty-five articles by Binder are included a wide range of important topics. From the first one published in 1927 to the last posthumous publications, there are treatments of materials which Binder gathered by study, research and professional experience during his prolific career.

A Time to Mourn: Judaism and the Psychology of Bereavement (Jack Spiro)
Jews have been honored throughout the ages for their exemplary behavior regarding the living. Even more extraordinary, has been their universal habit of compassion toward the dead. In his groundbreaking book, Rabbi Spiro considers traditional Jewish customs of mourning from a uniquely psychological point of view. His in depth analyses cover periods from biblical, Talmudic, medieval, all the way through to modern times. By focusing on recognizable psychological struggles such as anxiety, ambivalence and guilt, he sheds new light upon the meaning of rituals like Shiva - "the week of mourning." Though the book deals with a subject that has been called "the last taboo," its focus is on the living, providing life-enhancing guideposts for rabbis and religious leaders of ALL faiths as well as positive help for anyone who has ever found themselves in the position of comforting the bereaved.

In the Footsteps: Memorial Lectures Compiled by Rabbi Norbert Weinberg
This is a collection of memorial lectures delivered by Rabbi Weinberg. The author's goal was to present to his congregants and readers a fundamental understanding and appreciation of many of the topics of contemporary Judaism. Prominently discussed are such themes as Israel and its implications regarding the rebuilding of the Holy Temple, the Jewish concepts of conversion, confession, marriage, prophesy and dreams. The text also delves into the philosophical foundations of human relations and prayer, searching for the common denominator which marks the Jewish faith as a "beacon of light" to humanity.

Jewish Medical Ethics: A Comparative And Historical Study Of The Jewish Religious Attitude To Medicine And Its Practice (Immanuel Jakobovits)
This noted work is the first comprehensive treatise on the subject - and indeed on the history of religious medical ethics in general. Tracing the development of Jewish and other religious views on medico-moral problems from antiquity to present day, it is profusely annotated by references to the original sources in religious, medical, legal and historical literature. The subjects treated include abortion, artificial insemination, birth control, euthanasia, autopsies, eugenics, sterilization, the treatment of patients on the Sabbath and the attitude to faith healing and irrational medical beliefs. Several chapters are devoted to the physician in Jewish religious law - his studies and privileges, his license and legal responsibilities, his professional charges and the admission of his evidence. Originally published in 1959 this edition was revised in 1975 with recent developments in Jewish medical ethics which traces the evolution of Jewish law, as revealed in rabbinical judgments and discussions, through the on-going process of applying timeless principles and precedents to the changing social and scientific conditions of the times. A resourceful reference this historical work is not only a source, but a guide for many students, scholars and rabbis who are constantly questioning, researching and re-evaluating these ethics in the ever changing society in which we live.

Feldafing (Simon Schochet)
It is Spring, 1945. For Europe, the last rattles of the most destructive war ever. Amid idyllic surroundings in southern Bavaria, a small but growing band of labor and extermination camp survivors begins the terrifying journey of the dead back to life. It soon becomes clear that, for some, the nightmare will never end. A few cannot bear a single ray of the new light and extinguish themselves in a kind of agony of the soul, but there are hundreds who hang onto life or grasp at it with astonishing courage. We watch as gradually, hesitantly, these human wrecks begin to put the horror of the camps behind them to become unique individuals again. For these survivors Feldafing is a limbo, an alien halfway house somewhere between hell and a mysterious future. Simon Schochet remembers and through his anonymous narrator reconstructs with subtle understatement and profound insight the numbness of this limbo, the tentative return of humor, the slow and stumbling growth of trust and love.

Saging: How to Grow Older and Wiser (Joan Z. Shore)
A very limited edition still available. Each copy, autographed by the author, is not a book about aging or anti-aging. It is a book about growing older (growing up), which we all do from the moment we are born, and which is very different from growing old (growing down). The author proposes nine pointers to guide us on the way, and she coins a new word - SAGING - that expresses the joy of growing older and wiser. This is a book of common sense and uncommon sense. Joan Z. Shore reaffirms many of our cherished values, and at the same time she challenges many of our preconceived notions. It's a book for all ages, reminding us that growing older really means we're growing. /Deepak Chopra, Author, "How to Know God."

The Haggadah of Passover (Edited by Rabbi David and Tamar De Sola Pool)
The Passover Haggadah expresses Judaism's optomistic faith that liberty, so often assailed and so often denied, shall yet triumph and become a precious heritage for all mankind everywhere. The Haggadah is indeed a joyous ritual of freedom, celebrating through instruction, worship and song Israel's liberation from bondage. Though the Exodus occured over three thousand years ago, because of the Passover Haggadah no memory is more strongly imbeded in the Jewish consciuousness than the story told herin and lived and affirmed anew in every generation. This edition of the time-hallowed Haggadah in its familiar traditional Hebrew text with a new interpretive English translation was originally prepared for the use of the Jewish men and women in the armed forces of the United States who were fighting to preserve freedom from the onslaughts of fascism. Over a third of a million copies of this book brought to them a heightened dedication to the ideal of liberty doubly theirs as Americans and as Jews.*"May that great hope for mankind born at the Exodus from Egypt live on and find consecration ever anew in every Jewish home with the recital of this Passover Haggadah in an era of abiding peace for all men." David and Tamar De Sola Pool- -April 1947*

The KGB Solution at Katyn: Love and Death in the Katyn Forest (Maurice Shainberg)
A K.G.B Colonel's secret diary reveals the Soviet massacre of Polish prisoners in the Katyn Forest. A full accounting of the awesome and maligant use of power by the Soviet Union from a man who endured the destruction of his family, his community, and his religious faith during the brutal Nazi occupation of Poland. Shainberg candidly describes the inner workings of the Polish-Soviet wartime regime and of the unreported details of the infamous Katyn Forest Massacre. Taken directly from the secret diary of Shainberg's commanding officer, Soviet Colonel Gregory Zaitev, which without doubt documents Soviet complicity in the tragic event, Shainberg reveals, in all its minute horror, the torture and death of the Polish officers imprisoned by the Russians at Katyn during WWII. The diary gives us a searing, personal picture of the KGB Colonel's sexual and political exploits.

Window of the Soul
The first selection of kabbalah from the teachings of Rabbi Isaac Luria (1534-1572) translated fom the original passages of Hebrew. This book fulfills the need to bring a selection of Isaac Luria's teachngs to Judaic and cross-cultural channels in modern society for the first time. Luria's kabbalah is as radical as it is revolutionary, because in ways that other kabbalists never thought possible, he answered not only the Jewish people's deepest questions of exile and homelessness, but with a vision given only to the most gifted of kabbalistic mystics, he was to explain the very structure of the inner worlds of the spirit and of their evolution that led to the ultimate birth of souls and of our cosmos. The Seixas-Kursheedts and the Rise of Early American Jewry (Kenneth Libo and Abigail Kursheedt Hoffman)
The Seixas-Kursheedt family is remarkable in the annals of American Jewish History for having provided American Jewry with spiritual guidance and enrichment from the Revolutionary War well into the nineteenth century. As a tightly knit family, the Seixas-Kursheedts played a crucial role in integrating Jews into the fabric of America. The family patriarch Gershom Mendes Seixas was a Revolutionary War patriot, hazzan of New York's oldest congregation, Shearith Israel, and American Jewry's official ambassador to the Gentile community. Gershom was one of thirteen ministers invited to George Washington's first inauguration. His son-in-law, Israel Baer Kursheedt, had more Jewish learning than any Jew who came before him to these shores. For decades, Israel Baer functioned as New York's unofficial chakam (sage) on matters pertaining to Jewish law. Israel Baer's son Gershom wa in many ways the fulfillment of the family's dream of carrying on its traditions. As leading architect of New Orleans' Jewish community, Gershom Kursheedt persuaded Judah Touro to become America's first major Jewish philanthropist. Rounding out the picture of a truly remarkable family is Gershom Mendes Seixas son David, a pioneer educator of the deaf in this country and a victim of anti-Semitism.

Hebrew Alphabets: 400B.C.E. to our Days (Reuben Leaf)
The art of calligraphy has been greatly admired throughout history, both by those proficient in scribal skills, as well as by those to whom it has aesthetic and cultural appeal. Until now, however, very little has been competently produced on this subject. "Hebrew Alphabets" is a compilation of plates of the most prominent forms of Hebrew lettering from ancient times to the present. In this collection, Reuben Leaf has afforded the general public a glimpse into the development of the Hebrew alphabet in its broadest scope. The author, himself a graphic artist, presents the results of extensive research into Jewish sciptual culture. Historically, the Hebrew alphabet has undergone many physical changes, as can readily be observed by comparing the various plates in this book.
